And as far as sequels in general, I don't have a problem with them if the recurring characters are strong with compelling adventures. This is why I believe Kung Fu Panda will only get better with each sequel, given the wide range of mythic storytelling that comes with martial arts as an overarching theme. Some of the best martial arts films of the past decade (Crouching Tiger, Hero, Flying Daggers, Golden Flower, Fearless) have such strong narratives, the films don't really need the fighting, even though the action definitely makes it more interesting. Po's "hero's journey" story, as well as Hiccup's, is what made these films such good animated features. And unlike Shrek, which wasn't based on a series of books, there is plenty of source material to base the Dragon sequels on, as well as centuries of martial arts stories for Panda. Cars 2, OTOH, I hope is the last of its kind. It might be a fun film, but I think the jokes are wearing thin with the whole talking cars thing. Mater getting his oil pan washed by a Japanese bidet puts the whole franchise in perspective. I'm done.
