There have been many posts here and other boards about 8th grade graduation gifts, and words were a reaction based on my experience that dates back to 1994...my youngest left 8th grade. Just last Saturday we were having a discussion about how my grandson was getting out of 5th grade this week. His mother, my youngest, turned to her husband and said..."What are we going to do for his graduation?" Both her husband and myself looked at her like she had two heads and agreed that..."What for? 5th grade, really? All those years, in our mind, are stepping stones to the important stuff. They are expected of you to get to the congratulations part of life. I know that sounds as if I am being judgmental about people that do more. I'm not, it's just that I am getting to the age where the world has changed from how I knew it and certain things surprise me still. But it is what it is, there are many thing that happen in today's world that I don't understand, and it doesn't really matter...they happen anyway. What you are doing is very nice and I didn't mean to take away from that...just my age showing, I guess.

Anyway, no hard feelings at all Just to let you know .....some of my son's classmates have limo's picking them up from school on the last day......I just laughed when I heard that one

" I think part of it may be that as a society we are putting more and more pressure on kids, so it becomes a bigger deal when they to reach certain milestones. My son is just finishing up 4th grade (not at all sure how that happened, btw, as I have not aged a day). This year he had an average of 2.5 hours of homework each night and 4-5 big projects or book reports each month. If you include the work he did at school, that is an insane amount of school work for a 10 year old. I completely understand doing something special for kids after they have worked so hard to keep up good grades for several years.
