    The first movie will be The Hobbit...the second will be a sequel, filling in the gaps between the Hobbit and LOTR.

    And let's think about this. The Golden Compass is on its way to becoming one of the biggest flops ever. New Line which produced this and the LOTR films thought they had a new epic trilogy that would make them billions. New Line had to greenlight the Hobbit they had no other choice.

    IIRC the Silmarillion deals with time that are long before Bilbo's time.

    So it sounds like part 2 will be "non-canonical". I sure hope that George Lucas doesn't write that script.

    Most does, but there is also material about the second and third ages at the end. Kind of like the appendices at the end of ROTK.

    Read the Children of Hurin - JRR Tolkien completed by Christopher Tolkien - it really helps bring the Silmarillion together for somewhat ( and I stress somewhat ) easier reading.

    and yes it does take place before the Hobbit so that timeline is an issue.

    I'm not aware of any works he made between The Hobbit and LOTRs, but I'm not completely informed in that regard.

    I always assumed many of his other works were based on events that happened in the 1st or 2nd age of Middle Earth -- wouldn't mind seeing a movie about them.

    Not so keen on seeing a movie about what happened between The Hobbit and LOTRs "if" it is not based on Tolkein's work.

    Yep, because if one was lazy and just read the thread title he might have thought that Mickeal was looking to play with little people.
