[Mods, I realize that this thread might live in "General Entertainment" or "World Events," but I thought the scope of the Live Earth effort made it worthy of Community. But I won't torch a rainforest if you move it.]

Lately it seems that I get all my information on LP. I guess I need to get out more :)

If they burned 500,000 gallons to put on the shows and got across a message that saves 750,000, that's 250,000 gallons saved.

The organizers of Live Earth amassed a truly INCREDIBLE array of stars who performed, made video "commercials", or otherwise supported the event. It is amazing to me that the whole thing didn't generate more advance buzz.

Contrast this to "Live Aid." That was promoted as the event of the decade. Granted, it was the first, the granddaddy of the big "cause" concerts. So it makes sense that it got such attention.

But this one got less promo than the 2007 Country Music Awards. What gives?

As an aside, I saw a promo on local news last night which seemed to indicate Al Gore's organization may benefit financially from Live Earth. I've heard nothing else so don't really know what it is about.

Seems like a pattern to me. And it went on and on for thousands of years before the use of fossil fuels and carbon emmissions.
So how much of this global warming are we causing? And if it really exists, does it have something to do with sun spots and other natural cycles?

Sorry, but I don't trust Gore. I like music though. And I'm going to fly to WDW from California in three days, thanks to a lot of jet fuel; I'll be riding on a whole lot of Disney rides that use a whole lot of power; and then I will be on the Disney Wonder cruising on the deep blue sea, and the last time I checked, it is not a sail boat. Shame on me!

Yeah, changing one's habits because of the exhortation of an entertainer doesn't make much sense, does it?

But it is very cool that this event is so skillfully introducing very compelling inducements to change habits amidst the performances. IMHO, this is one of the best balances ever achieved by a televised "cause." The music is great; it keeps one tuned. The "commercials" by Chris Rock, Penelope Cruz, Whoopi, et. al., are powerful.

Using "entertainment" to suck one into a venue whereby a commercial or political message is played? Oldest trick in the book.

Using the audience's affection for a specific entertainer to sell a commercial or political message? Second oldest trick in the book.

Yeah, yeah, she's an entertainer foremost. And a business woman. She's not stupid; she's still calculated. And yet she choses to make political/social statements that could cost her. Very cool.

Recycle. Metals in the metal container; paper in the paper container.

Purchasing music on-line versus purchasing CD's conserves petroleum products.

    Paper or plastic?
    Neither.
Take your own fabric bag to the store.
Or, if one bag is not enough, reuse the paper or plastic they gave you last time.

Little changes add up. If everyone in your subdivision changed... If all the parents of all the kids in your kid's grade changed... If all LP'ers changed...
