I want to do it this year though...

Do most participants also sign up for the Family 5K the day before, or is it too much to do 5K one day, then 13mi the next? We'll be bringing our son, so we'd really like him to be a part of the Kids Races. The marathon newbie would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

I think you can do both days if you train properly up until then. Personally, the day before a race I don't do anything I don't have to, to conserve energy. I think you just have to maintain a 16 minute pace, with the goal to finish the 5k saturday shouldn't be an issue for you. Just take it easy that day. The hardest part is waking up in the dark and starting the race in the dark, but it's fun, though you don't get much sleep the night before, but the adrenaline makes up for it. Remember to increase your mileage and speed slowly to avoid injuries. Currently, I am training for my 3rd LA marathon and unfortunately am nursing an achilles injury which is not looking to good right now, but any of these injuries can pop up, so don't bite off more than you can chew, remember to warm up and cool down, lots of water, gatorade, and gel/bars to maintain your energy and hydration.

Now, if only we could get companies to donate some decent running shoes. You should see the shoes the kids run in!

Cool thing with entering the half and the 5k is that you get the cool 5k Medal(Pirates.) I'm just happy to see this event yearly....and not a fiasco like the first and ONLY Marathon back in 1995.
