Like many other rock bands, the current 'Chicago' is a mere shadow of the original group. I've been listening to 'Chicago' since 1978 -- right around the time Terry Kath died, and went right into 'Hot Streets.' Bought their earlier albums and even hung in with them during 'Chicago 13' and 'Chicago XIV' -- cheering them back with 'Chicago 16' and 'Hard To Say I'm Sorry.' Flash forward to 2008, and only four original members of 'Chicago' remain! -- Robert Lamm, Jimmy Pankow, Walt Parazaider, and Lee Loughnane -- and those last three guys are the horn section. Tenor and bass player Peter Cetera left the group for a solo career 20 years ago. Even drummer Danny Seraphine moved on years ago to co-found 'California Transit Authority' -- essentially a cover band that plays old 'Chicago' songs. So with 'Stone of Sisyphus' I wasn't expecting a 70s revival. I knew it was only a 15 year rewind. And given that, it's a really well done album. In fact, for my money, I'm enjoying this much more than the sluggish, morose and heavy-on-the-ballads 'Chicago XXX.' Good vocals and harmonies by Bill Champlin, Robert Lamm, and 'new guy' Jason Scheff. [he's been with the band for 20+ years, and he still seems like the new guy], strong horn charts, and a great variety of tunes. Stand outs for me -- for the driving horns and up-tempo beat 'Stone of Sisyphus' 'The Pull' 'Plaid' 'Here with Me', 'The Show Must Go On.' 'Bigger than Elvis' -- great sentimentality from Jason Scheff [I was never a big fan of the power ballads -- even the 'If You Leave Me Know' and 'Baby What a Big Surprise' from the 'good ol' days]. Yes, it's a throw back -- but only 15 years back. It'd be damn near impossible to bring back a 'Chicago Transit Authority' reunion. But, hey, who thought that we'd have a new 'Indiana Jones' movie this summer?
