Tall Ships in Newport, CA have a Disney Feel

    btw-- would love to see the Interceptor, but how cool would a recreation of the Black Pearl be ?

    I remember being a cadet on the Tall Ship Californian for two weeks (back when I was in High School). We sailed from Chula Vista to Catalina Island to Santa Barbara Island then on to Dana Point. I believe I have some pictures I will have to scan them in. The certificate I got for completing my training was really nicely done, has a bunch of drawings on it. My favorite part was climbing on the netting then jumping off the ship. We did hit a storm on the way out however that was really bad (ripped a sail). There were 8 regular crew, myself, and one other crew fighting that storm. The rest of the cadets got sick.

    I know the Pilrim was sold and had a name change, and I saw her recently in Dana Point (last year) but I can't remember her new name. Boy, was that fun, though.

    As for tall ships there was a huge tall ships gathering this past summer out near Tacoma over the 4th of July weekend. I believe that they have it every year, but it's probably several of the same ones that you see at other gatherings.
