The computer that reads your barcode from your admission ticket also has to match it up against a front gate scan, as you can't get a fastpass unless your ticket was used for admission. So it's pretty unlikely that a random barcode would be accepted for a FP.

But now, as danyoung said, it MUST be an admission ticket, and it MUST have been use for admission on the same day. in the same instance, if you have a AP from a family member (or anyone else) that has not been used for admission yet (they're back at the hotel sleeping late, for example), it cannot be used for FB. Only once it has been scanned for admission that day will it be valid for use in the FP system.
