Jack and Zero for DL's Haunted Mansion Holiday were built by Garner Holt (a man who runs a tremendously talented workshop building Animatronics) for a fraction of the cost that WDI could build them for. All of the animatronics for every recent parade from Legend of Mythica at TDS to Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams at DL to Disney's Pixar Play Parade at DCA were made by outsourced vendors. If any of you read FORTUNE - I recommend the Stanley Bing column for the Private Equity issue. It is about the manufacture of news on "quiet" days and it is hysterical. For some reason I can't see it on his site: http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/0...ndex.htm

Specifically... <<< The memo states that after review manufacturing all Audio-Animatronics figures in-house is not feasible in terms of cost and staffing. Instead, Imagineering’s Manufacturing and Prototype Operations group based in North Hollywood will “build some select, highly complex†figures in-house. >>> Doobie.

WDI executives officially told the employees that some of their work was going to be outsourced from now on. Less work means less need for labor. These types of memos have been used by managers for decades to prepare their workers for layoffs.
