Back in the late 50's, my grandparents took my dad and my aunt to Disneyland for the first time. On a working man's salary, the vacation was a pretty big deal at the time, and I know he felt pretty proud being able to take his family on such an adventure. They stayed at the Silver Moon (scroll down at the link), and whenever I would go to Disneyland, my grandpa would ask "Is the Silver Moon still there?" It's gone now but it was there for a long time. My personal favorite were the Stovall's motels. The Inn of Tomorrow with its Googie-style exterior and interiors, the topiary out front, it felt very "Disney" to me back then.

Lots of Jetson-y architectural touches -- colorful acrylic panels in the rooms to divide the room a bit, lots of boomerang shapes and such. And of course those topiary trees added a little touch of it's a small world to the whole experience. The real attraction of these places were the swimming pools. If you were lucky enough to stay at one that had a tall, curving slide -- woo hoo!

Some were tiki/polynesian, some had genies and magic lamps. There was also a Grand Hotel, which was for a time the only equivalent "big" hotel besides the Disneyland Hotel.
