I thought I would be surprised with lots of original stuff---which I was in the full episodes---but I was surprised at how many of so many of our favorite "classic" segments were done on the show within the first five years. The DVD set features the premiere episode of the first 5 seasons, along with bonuses called "Classic Clips" of favorite beloved segments taken from each season.

In the pilot the only Muppets we meet are Big Bird (very duncey and goofy with a smaller head), an orange Oscar, Bert 'n Ernie (we first meet Ernie nekkid in the tub, lol), and an apparently as-yet-un-named Cookie Monster. It's a pretty slow-moving episode, but by about season 3 it was really hitting its stride.

I've just spent a while researching YouTube for as many of the segments as I could find from the episodes and "Classic Cuts" sections, and I'll split them up into separate categorized posts.

Some of these are beloved favorites of mine, and some I had completely forgotten about but warmly remembered when they started. I'm sure any Sesame fan who comes into this thread will find some personal gems of their own.

I loved every minute of this set, and I really really hope it's successful enough to make an "Old School: 1974-1979ish set.

    Enjoy...

And then there good things that aren't on YouTube, like Jesse Jackson leading a street full of kids in repeating his piece "I Am Somebody". Some other star appearances are a very young James Earl Jones reciting the alphabet, Jackie Robinson doing the same, Bill Cosby also with the ABCs, Johnny Cash singing "Nasty Dan" to Oscar, and Lou Rawls singing the alphabet. And a neat count to 20 song by a group called "Listen My Brother".

Cookie Monster's first clip isn't up, and neither is Big Bird Meets Little Bird---where LB was actually performed by a man (later to be taken over by Fran Brill).

There is also Big Bird's first meeting of Snuffy. A very creepy, kinda catatonic Snuffy with short fur and stationary yellow-green eyes. And it's also pretty clear to me he was in fact real from early on, as he plays with kids in a couple of Street segments.

There were also a couple of Waiter Grover segments in Charlie's restaurant, but the ones on the set aren't on YouTube. And Super Grover's first segment is on the set, as is the Count's first song, "Song of the Count".

And the original sales pitch reel is also included...it has Rowlf with Kermit discussing the show, and shows some behind-the-scenes footage of all the research and professional discussion and scrutinzation that goes into every segment. A nice bonus.
