Not the best film ever created, but definitely worth checking out, especially if you like the Beatles. Great music, interesting visuals, and not much plot. But if you go in with those expectations, you should enjoy it.

The music and the visuals are the whole point - overwhelming any story deficiencies that it might have. I recall reading that they had completed ... COMPLETED ... about a half hour of the movie before they even came up with the story line. They were a small commercial studio who decided, on their own, that they were going to try and make Yellow Submarine an artistic achievement, rather than the feature-length Beatles TV Show episode United Artists was expecting. Budget be durned. Which is why the remake of Yellow Submarine seems to me to be such a lousy idea. Zemeckis is on crack if he thinks his motion capture silliness is going to come anywhere close to the artistic standard set by the original visuals. It's poster art ... totally two dimensional. Just try and imagine a Blue Meanie in CGI motion capture. Yucch. There was a DVD release of the original a lonnnng time ago, probably about the time you got your VHS. If your copy had "Hey Bulldog" as one of the songs, that was the most recent version. An earlier VHS release used the American edit that doesn't include that song. Being so visual-centric, the movie loses a lot when cropped to 4 x 3 and shown from a VHS tape. IIRC, the DVD was at least letterboxed.

Is Atomic Fiction taking over YS for Disney? I can't find any current info on this project still being active.

Did they get the filming done before they closed?

John and George BFTD, only with different voices. Do Paul and Ringo know about this, and are they recording their real speaking voices for this one?
Originally Posted By mawnck >>Why in the world would they cut "Hey Bulldog" out of "Yellow Submarine" in any version of the film?<< The movie was too long for the American distributor's liking, and Hey Bulldog was the most superfluous segment. They only had to animate a few new scenes of the "Beatles battle" to bridge the gap in the storyline. >>Do Paul and Ringo know about this, and are they recording their real speaking voices for this one?<< They didn't for the first one. The Beatles' only involvement was to toss songs at it, and to appear in the short live action scene at the end. They weren't expecting it to be any good, and wanted to stay as far away from it as possible. (Too bad they didn't do the same for Magical Mystery Tour.) The live action scene was very last minute, after the Beatles realized that the film wasn't going to suck. So last minute that the animators didn't have time to do the planned animation for the background. So the Beatles ended up doing the scene in front of a blank screen. The current project wouldn't be going forward if Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia hadn't given it the thumbs up.

Maybe because the producers thought Green was the best person to get down the physical aspects of the character. I haven't seen the movie(ok nobody has) but it seems there was a lot of running and jumping required in role which maybe a child actor could physically perform. Which is why Andy Serkis was hired as Gollum and King Kong because he was able to handle the physical aspects.
