I was just remembering something about Cynthia Harriss. Aside from the institutional reasons I didn't care for her, I had a "close encounter" that I didn't like.

When I was working at the resort, I sent her office a long email one day discussing various issues around the resort. I offered my suggestions for solutions. Her assistant replied that Cynthia was very interested in my ideas and had asked the assistant to set up a meeting as soon as I was back from school again. When I returned from school, I requested again and again to have that meeting. I was cast aside like yesterday's steamed spinach. I didn't care for that.

Anyway, that was one "close encounter" (or lack of it!) with a Big Disneyland Person. I thought it would be interesting to hear the good, bad, and indifferent tales of others (CM's and non-CM's) who have encountered Disneyland higher-ups.

As we were making our way out of the Main Street parade gate around to in front of the Train Station, I noticed that he was standing right behind where I would be for our performance. As part of one of the songs we play, there's a drum break and everybody just sort of runs around, so I turned around and shook his hand and said he was doing a great job. He was with somebody else, who seemed to be like a body guard, and looked a little scared at first when he saw me heading toward them. I shook both of their hands, and turned back around and started playing again. I like to think that I gave him that little something extra that makes Disneyland so special that day...

His name tag said "Matt". We made eye contact and smiled at each other. I asked if he was President of DL and he said yes. It was Matt Ouimet. I expressed my appreciation for the sprucing up that was happening in the park. He asked me a few auestions about my feelings for the park and shared how he hoped to make it all sparkle again.

It was only a three minute conversation. But he treated me as though I was important to him. I was impressed.

I made smiling eye contact with "Matt" (as his badge said) and it was one of those "yes, I'm THAT Matt" moments, but by the time I thought to speak up, we'd passed each other.

I wish I'd thought faster on my feet. :)
