I've seen Van Halen a couple of times during the Hagar era, and the shows were awsome...but one thing I DIDN'T like was that they played so little stuff from pre-Hagar (like, three tunes).

Now, flip-side. David Lee Roth is back, and as much as I'd love to check it out...they are doing NONE of the stuff after Roth left the band (and there was some GREAT stuff in there!).

I dunno, seems kinda lame. Like a David Lee Roth tribute band or something. Is there some reason they're not playing ANY Van Halen material post-1985 (or at least very little, I might have missed a tune or two).

Thoughts? I would love to check it out, but I saw the Rolling Stones and honestly it was lame. This, too, seems like the old "Rockers with Walkers" deal...just a desperation move cause they're getting old and need the cash.

On the other hand, how many more chances would ya get to see a legendary band play ?

Just as Sammy couldn't pull off Davey's voice, I'm sure Davey couldn't pull off Sammy's voice. That's probably your answer.

If you check them out, let me know how it was!

So, whether someone considers these guys too old, is not relevant. As long as they can still play, they should go for it while they can. But, as far as VH goes, I haven't heard them play recently. But, the set list looks great.

It is a touch pathetic...that guys WALKS like he's old, which does nothing to help the stage vibe (sad to say).

In comparison to ultra performers like Jaggar, Tyler, and Plant (all of whom "still got it", even though they're old), it looked pretty bad.

Plus, Eddie's kid looked like, well, a freaked out 16 year old kid thrust into a situation that was extremely scary.

    Which makes sense.

The concern is not the age of the people, but the freshness date on the material. The Police? Van Halen? Genesis? It's not a date, it's dated easy listening!

-- Which is not to say I'd give up an offer of (free) tickets for the upcoming Old Spice tour!

Now some of the aforementioned Plant - Tyler etc still pull it off. Yes I am sure some of it is colored by my memories of seeing them in their hey days also - but they haven't lost that much as DLR had. IMHO

"Shirley" you jest. Most of what goes on here at LP is the sharing of opinions; this very topic, "Van Halen 2007, cool or lame?" is ALL about opinion.

I do think the freshness of the material is important (to ME, at least), which is part of the reason I really enjoyed seeing Aerosmith perform while they were still pumping out the hits as opposed to the Stones which, though legendary, felt more to me like an oldies act.

Just my 2 cents (and anyway I'm a way bigger fan of Van Halen than the Stones anyway...my generation and all that, so I'm sure the concert would be a fun hype even if they DID suck lol).
