I know there's a place for sweet family films, but I think in recent years, they've kind of been neutered. I grew up in the 80s, and the movies we had were rather dark (The NeverEnding Story, The Dark Crystal, Return to Oz, Labyrinth, etc.). Yeah, they scared us, but they let us face our fears and get past them. Coraline does the same thing for today's kids. It's a rare and beautiful movie.

It didn't feel quite as dark as the book did when I read it, and I have minor quibbles with some of the artistic changes, but overall it was wonderfully rendered. If you can't see it on 3D, don't fret. 3D is nice, but I don't think anything is missed by seeing it in 2D.
