I don't see how extending it will make it any better, as they have already established the lack of anything real with the promotion. Maybe if there was actually something to promote then it would do well...

The 25th anniversary of Epcot has enough general public interest to devote some time on GMA. So, moving the announcement by a day would not have had the intended effect: it's not as if the announcement of the renewal of a corporate marketing campaign is national news. I can tell you exactly how this happened: once Disney got confirmation that they'd get airtime on Good Morning America (and who knows where else that day), the marketing department went into full gear to figure out exactly what message they wanted to deliver. This may be their one opportunity for a year to get this sort of free promotional airtime specifically for Parks & Resorts - what to say? The fact that the reason for it was Epcot's 25th is not really related to what the most important message they wanted to deliver. Consider from a marketing perspective what they're trying to accomplish with free PR: try to get viewers to consider visiting WDW sometime in the near future. YOAMD gives someone a forward-looking reason to do so, whereas the Epcot 25th Anniversary is just marking that particular day (and the target market of the GMA segment was sitting at home watching GMA, and not at WDW for the anniversary). I'm not saying that I agree with it or think that YOAMD is a good strategy, but I can clearly see how the GMA segment ended up as it did.

Disney didn't want the 25th even acknowledged in any way. There isn't an 'event' unless Disney Marketing decides on it 12-18 months in advance and starts sending out feelers/invites to media. They don't want conflicting messages. And the only one they care about right now is 2YearsoaMD. Heck, some fansites didn't even consider the day worthy enough of coverage.
