And the worst thing of all is the actual sale of the car. People always want to give you a check, and I am so leery of a bad check that I always like to ask for cash. But, of course, people don't usually carry $4000 on them, so then they have to go to the bank, or they want to give you some other kind of cashier's check - and i wouldn't know a fake one if I saw one. Anyway - what do some of you do to make the process failproof and easier on the nervous system?
PS - anybody wanna buy a truck?

other than that, try to anticipate any question they may have. Usually stuff on maintenance. How long to last oil change? How long were the tires replaced? Any major problems? Why are you selling it? (sounds personal but people like to know)

The other thing, make them feel comfortable in it. You want them to think its their truck. Point out some of the things you have liked on it (Stereo, adjustments on the seat, suspensions, etc).

    Good luck.

Before handing over the keys, make sure the potential buyer hands over something as collateral. Also, write down their driver's license and insurance info. Ya have to make sure they are legal to drive.

I sold my car on the evening before my trip to Disneyland last October and I was wondering the same stuff. I was asking $2500.00 for the car and, incredibly they just peeled off twenty five $100.00 bills. If that hadn't have happened it would have had to wait until my return...no personal checks.

In my state they require a title transfer and I don't give that out until all the financial things have been completely satisfied.

Have you considered consignment at a garage? For a small fee they'll handle the sale for you. Some car dealers also buy cars. It may yield less money but if you don't want the hassle it may be the better way to go.

And - if you were serious, Peeaanuut, it's a 1994 Chevy Silverado, V-6, 4.3 liter, 5-speed, 4-WD, 151,000 highway miles, air, power steering, AM/FM, canopy, bed liner, off-road tires, etc. Great truck, but I just don't use it anymore and I'm tight for cash. Why pay insurance and licensing every month when I'm not using it to its full potential, right?

Is yours the "block dash" with the quasi digital gauges or a conventional analogue speedometer? Heh the quasi digitals in the 90 are so funky and campy :)

People offering trades ( and not always cars in trade) - late night calls, whack jobs beyond belief, a no show at the bank for a sale......

I vowed never to do it again. If it was a newer vehicle I would say take to Carmax and get an offer, on older cars I just don;t have a solution. Family member with a teenager coming of driving age ?

I don;t envy anyone who has to sell in the paper, it will try your nerves

you do not have to give your phone number on there - it is done by emails - which you do not have to put in the ad either as it goes threw craigslist then gets forwarded on to you..
you can ask for there phone number instead of giving them yours.

you can also arrange meeting the person at THERE bank to look at the truck

OH and I will also tell my hubby - sometimes he runs across someone looking for trucks ( sometimes the wholesaler he deals with buys cars & trucks for a good price too)
