Starting at 7 PM on Friday, July 15, a stretch of the 405 freeway, from the 101 to the 10, will be closed. All weekend. Until Monday morning at 6 AM. They're demolishing a very large bridge, and they say they don't want it landing on anyone. This is one of the busiest stretches of road in the country. The local media is calling the closure "Carmageddon" (clever monkeys!) and all the local government mucketymucks are pleading with everyone in LA county to stay where they are and don't attempt to drive anywhere. Several major tourist-type attractions in the area, including the Getty Museum, will be closed. LAX is just south of the closure, so if you're flying into there with the intent of proceeding to Anaheim, then you should be OK. In fact, the crowds at DL *might* be a lot smaller as a result of this. Nobody seems quite sure. It is sure that the 5 (the freeway by Disneyland) will be a mess regardless, since everyone who needs to be on the 405 will be on it instead. If you were planning on venturing north of Orange County, then it's time to start re-planning. Hollywood will be absolutely out of the question. Unless you were planning to take Amtrak and the Red Line. Or maybe a helicopter. Or a pogo stick. http://tinyurl.com/pogosticky There are plenty of articles, both humorous and non, about the situation. Here's a good one to start with: http://blogs.laweekly.com/info...bway.php It's a bit outdated - the mayor isn't downplaying it anymore, and there will be a few more free transportation options besides the Red Line - but it will give you an idea of what you're in for if you decide to attempt LA this weekend. And a humorous article, which I found, after reading the actual Q&A that it's based on, is a more accurate summary than it might at first appear. http://blogs.laweekly.com/info...chat.php

These past few months my head HAS pretty much been in the sand, and I didn't know the extent of it (the Carmageddon or the sand) until yesterday. Admittedly I don't get up to LA county that much, but still ... Anyway, this post was mainly for the tourists.

Watched the story of the bride and groom who had a big wedding party planned, on that side of town. I think they ended up cancelling, didn't they?? Well ... I won't have to worry about it .. now I'm 8,000 miles away from "Carmageddon" in the sedate Northern Beaches of Australia. heh-hee

So any predictions on how this may affect DL crowds? I am guessing most of LA will plan on staying off the freeways in general so I would guess a lot of locals won't be at DLR.
