Since the show is performed multiple times a day, every day, there is obviously more than one cast. The performers are very much in control of these characters and need to be properly trained to perform with them. The articulated heads are still being used (at least they were a few days ago), unfortunately though they are not for every performance/day quite yet. Hopefully soon.

    LOLOL!!!

But this is yet another great example of how unpredictible the show quality at WDW can be... and there goes one more disappointed fan who didn't get to see what he expected from Disney.

    Sad.

This is a good description of what's going on if you're an engineer, but there's GOT to be a better entertainment term that Disney would prefer to use that says the same thing. Using the words "articulated heads" in a conversation just seems a little creepy to me.

Yeah, right. Then you are going to have some 'splaining to do.

You say Mickey is saving his energy for his show later. If he prods further as to why he doesn't blink, say he only blinks when he's performing because the sun gets in his eyes.

If your kid is so smart that he doesn't buy that, then he probably realizes Mickey is a person in a costume, and it doesn't matter anyway.
