We've gotten ours in August before and the card expired the following December -- so a little over a year. The trick is, just don't put more money on the card than you expect to spend. You can always transfer more Reward Dollars to the card easily online or by phone, but once the card expires unused dollars are gone. If some of your points expire in 2008 and your trip is in 2010, I'm not sure how the timing will work out for you there. In order not to lose those expiring points, perhaps there's something you want to buy at the DisneyStore or online? You can use the Rewards points in those places, too.

I would give disney a call and ask them if they have a way to transfer reward dollars into disney dollars. The worst thing they can tell you is no.
