If you want to just get a one day ParkHopper, that would be $25 extra, so for $5 more, it is a great deal. Plus, if you want to upgrade to an AP, it would be much more to get one fo the SoCal versions. You have to do it on any one of your three visits (and do it on the third day, to avoid Blockout dates). The AP should be back dated to your Birthday, but this way you get 3 visits during the summer (when the SoCal AP's are blocked out) and then get to visit many additional times.
