Newly released Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides featurette pieces together the previously seen introduction with Captain Jack Sparrow with scenes from the upcoming film including footage of Ian McShane as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz as Capt Jack's former flame.

It seems like fewer and fewer people realize that he's a real person, but we spent about a month studying him and other 'local' pirates in fourth grade in North Carolina (the state history year). I'm concerned that including a real historical figure (and the only real person in the entire series) in the fantasy world will just continue his progression away from the history books.

Or it will make kids curious to know more about him when they find out there was a real Blackbeard.

It's actually being faithful to the book. For this particular film, they purchased the rights to Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides, and that book does include such diverse elements as Blackbeard, zombies, and the fountain of youth.

And if they're using an existing story as a basis for the film, how are they going to fit in Jack and Barbosa? They don't exactly seem like they'd be easy characters to plug into another story.

    "^^^Like Pocahontas???"

    ...she's a real person?

My guess is that Blackbeard in this POTC film may actually be more viscious and "true to his character" than the 1960s counterpart.

    Sorry for the confusion, Basil!
