You live in an apartment building with paper-thin walls. You live next door to a guy whose girlfriend practically lives there. You can hear nearly everything that goes on in their apartment. She screams at him, a lot. She wakes you up; she screams so loud and so long it upsets the pets and kids in the building; other neighbors yell at her to shut up and she screams at the neighbors. Police and building management have both been informed and have issued warnings, but nothing changes.

One morning, early, she's screaming again. Neighbors are yelling at her to shut up. Her boyfriend asks her repeatedly, in a relatively low voice (which you can hear because you're trying to sleep just a few feet away), to be quiet or at least lower her voice. She doesn't. He hits her, once.

Would you call the cops? Would you cheer him on? Would you walk away?

    Hypothetically speaking, of course...

For the reasons everyone else already stated.

You have the right to a peaceful home. These neighbors are infringing on that with their behavior. It's unfortunate that the police and building management have had no effect on the situation yet.

I would call the cops everytime the couple is disruptive. Everytime.

'I don't give care' does read very cold and unfeeling, doesn't it? :)

I didn't call the police, but should have... If nothing else to work towards getting them booted outta there. Came home after work one evening a month or so later to find their couch (these were furnished apartments) sitting outside the door... burned. Stupid old broad had drank herself to sleep on the sofa with a lit cigarette. She could have easily burned down their apartment, mine and others.

They moved not long after that...

My point... Do it now and do it often - before things escalate and you're harmed personally.

Okay, probably not because my mom always complained about her neighbors, even if they were simply walking through their apartment, watching tv or, God forbid, laughing.

But if I thought that they were getting violent, I'd call, especially if children are present.

(My mom was also the type to tick you off until you wanted to smack her. It's not right to hit someone, but she had a way. I know that sounds bad but you'd have to know her to understand. Even so, I'd try to protect her when my step-dad hit her.)
