However we weren't expecting it. I felt really bad as my mom was the one who found him. So my mom, dad, DD and I took a walk around the block to deal with the find. DH (who is out of town) called his sister CinderellaShanny who came over with her DH and helped to place Sammy in the bed of our truck. The 3 of us then drove to the vet where I filled out paerwork as Shannon and Michael brought Sam inside.

It's really odd here tonight as Moose (DH and my German Shepard) is all alone. The poor guy must have watched Sam pass away. He's been depressed but DD has been here to give him plenty of hugs and offer her bottle.

I will say that I'm glad that I was home from school to see him before he left us, However I can't say the same for my brother who has yet to hear the news. At least we have not beeen able to reach him. Those two were best buds growing up.

Just thought that I would post this as I felt a need to tell someone the news.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Pets are part of our families. The pain of their lost is just as real as when we lose human members of our families.

<<Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... >>

If it's any help, when my sisters beloved dog died, the vet told her that it was good that her other dog had witnessed his passing,so that he would know that his friend was gone. The vet referred to a doggie sense that understands death. I hope it's true because it helped my sister not worry about her other doggie and I hope it is some comfort to you as you and Moose console each other.

Hugs to you and ear scratches to Moose.

He sounds like he had a good life to reach 16 and was much cared for.

We too lost our cat recently. The real shock for us was that he was only 2 years old, with no prior signs of sickness.

    Thoughts are with you.

I understand your sadness, the family members who had to find your dog had passed, that must be bad/ I also understand what you mean about the other dog missing their friend. When our dog took ill [cancer hit hard and fast] our other dog, his close friend was so sad to watch, she knew he was sick and was so worried and upset. She just laid around and moped for days, then we moved which must have added to her confusion and anxiety.

It's never easy losing a pet, even if they are old and if it is somewhat expected, my heart goes out to you.

I don't want to derail your topic or anything, but I also lost my dog yesterday. My mom called me yesterday afternoon in tears to tell me that my Phoenix didn't make it. She had been doing poorly for a couple of weeks now (my mom was feeding her by hand twice a day), and when my mom came back home from town, she was gone. She was 11 years old.

**big hugs to all who have lost dear pets**
