I'd been planning a party last night to celebrate my upcoming 50th, and having gotten thru the past 5 years! I'd been feeling that life surely was finally on an upswing.

So Saturday, I cleaned and tidied the house and yard, and stepped in the shower around 6pm to clean up and enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening before the final party preparations Sunday.

I'm blissing out when all of a sudden I hear a crash and realize I'm standing ankle deep in broken glass! The moment was surreal, I couldn't even process what had happened fast enough, but the (relatively new) shower door had spontaneously shattered without so much as a touch on it! (Skip the rest of this paragraph if you're squeamish) There's lots of blood dribbling down my legs, and then I notice a gaping wound above my left ankle! I realize I have to get out of the tub and do something about it, but I'm freaking out because I don't know how I can get out! Glass everyhere, including the track the other door needs to slide thru. Of course, no one else is home...

Long story short, I get out of the emergency room after 1am (5 stitches plus DermaBond), and the party goes off fine, even if I'd only had 4 hours of sleep! I'm still confounded as to how this happened, or how shattering-type glass can be used in frameless shower doors! Hopefully I'll be getting some compensation from the manufacturer. What a shock and huge hassle!!

When does life get to be simple again!?!

Life is a series of challenges that we are here to overcome and we are stronger in the end because of them. I feel that our purpose then in life is to learn from these challenges.

I am afraid life does not get simple. At least it hasn't for me yet. A lot of the things you have listed have gone on in my life in recent years and no matter how good things look; something else manages to creep in.
Best wishes for brighter days ahead. And I am glad your party came off well.

However, from the description you gave, it could have been worse. Not to minimize your injury, but people have died from breaking glass accidents and you got 5 stitches. Luckily you didn't get more injuries just trying to exit the shower and not to mention you got to save your dignity. I mean, your in the shower [presumably disrobed] you got yourself out OK, paramedics didn't have to break down the door or anything [presumably?]

I hope you heal well and no serious damage was done to any ligaments or anything, and hopefully minimal scar tissue.

Man that does sound scary and freaky. Wishing you an simpler path ahead for a while.

You know, I've researched and found out that tempered glass (used in cars and buildings!) does on occasion shatter spontaneously! What a scary thought. I'm not sure I want to use a glass shower door ever again!

I have to say that I do remember when life was much simpler, 1993-2001 when we were renting a house:
    ~ no yard work
    ~ no home repairs
    ~ no house projects
~ our parents didn't need our help or much attention at all
    ~ no funerals
~ no teenager's driving, friends, parties etc to worry about
~ lived next to national park and hiked often

That said, I don't think life gets any simpler as you get older! I have a great life and don't mean to complain, but I could go for a few months in a row with no major catastrophes!

I am glad this was a fairly "minor" crisis. My husband is in construction says that he has never heard of such a thing and even if it does happen there should be no sharp edges.

I remember that from 1996 to 2001 my life went something like this...1. My father died suddenly. 2. I had to close up my business due to lack of business. 3. I had to file personal bankruptcy. 4. My wife left me. 5. My children got married and left the nest. (not a bad thing but everything around me that I cared about seemed to distance itself, rightfully in this case, from me) 6. I had to sell my house of 26 years and split the profits with the X. 7. Had a job that I hated and was treated like dirt in. Honestly, I didn't know what to do or even if I should get up in the morning.

I had remembered seeing a small poster once that said...never give up - tomorrow may be just the day you have been waiting for. You know what? It was true. It took a number of tomorrows but my life now is the best it has ever been. I have a job I really like, I have managed to put away enough cash to live without fear of tomorrow and I am closer to my children and Grandchildren then I have ever been. Sometimes life just gives you a little bite on the butt to make you move forward to better things. Good luck to you LuLu!

My mom went through a similar freak accident a couple months ago. A large picture mirror (full length) shattered when she went past. A piece stuck in her wrist and there was blood everywhere. She drove herself to the doctor where she got some stitches.

Glass is a solution under pressure and I never trust it anymore.

You poor thing! Did you call an ambulance?

When I read the title of this thread I was excited thinking something good had happened to you and was looking forward to reading about your good fortune. Boy, was I disappointed! :(
I admire your stamina in going ahead with your party, I hope your guests took over any of the hard work involved and let you relax with your feet up.
    Best wishes on healing quickly!

Yes, they told me in ER that I was lucky a tendon didn't get severed. Most cuts were superficial, and the glue they use nowadays is great for those.

    >>even if it does happen there should be no sharp edges<<
I have heard this too. I don't know why this broke into varying size pieces, all of which were sharp, and some were very tiny and needle-like. (When I finally saw the gtraige nurse 3+ hours after, she found and removed some from my wounds!)

I agree Mary, after what I read today I'm not planning to install another glass door. However it's supposed to be exceedingly rare for this to happen.

YES, I'm definitely having a string of bad luck!

I appreciate your wishes and prayers, and do agree with you guys about life's challenges. "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" LOL!

I do have to say that I am very impressed with the way you kept your cool and handled yourself and took care to get the help you needed. I also have to say YOU GO GIRL for still having the party!!! 5 stitches may have slowed you down but I am just so happy that it didn't stop you from having your party!

I am wishing you a quick recovery time with practically no itchiness. ;)

I somehow managed to wiggle the other door open, reached out and flipped part of the bath rug over, and stepped on the back of it. Bloody footprints all the way to the phone! I called DD and tried not to sound hysterical, which really didn't work :p I went into the other tub to rinse my lower legs, DD got the gauze and we wrapped the large cuts, and tried to find an open Urgent Care with no luck! Ended up back at the hospital, which is about 2 miles from my house!
