On a more important note, I'm just not sure that a theme park is the right place for a memorial like this. There was discussion online after Katrina about doing something in DL's New Orleans Square, and while everybody did feel bad about the loss, few thought that there was anything that should be done on a permanent basis. Both NOS and World Showcase are for celebrating the cultures of unique places in the world, not mourning their losses.

That said, I do think it would be nice if Disney could something at the pavilion in the short term. I don't know what exactly would be appropriate, but it does seem like they could do something until the country is able to get back on its feet.

Perhaps they could do something not so much as a memorial per se, but an upgrade or two to the pavilion celebrating the Japanese people and their beautiful country would be very nice.

Roses are a nice idea, but since the cherry blossom season is almost upon us, a quick thing they could do would be to highlight pics or images of Japanese kids enjoying the beautiful flower viewings that always take place (and will this year, as well) around Japan. :)

Thanks for your excellent suggestion mrk...much appreciated!

How has the South been affected? And although this may seem shallow, what about the old buildings and temples in Kyoto, Nara and Himeji Castle, I wonder how resilient they were? Given how old they all are and they are UNESCO heritage sites.

I hope no one minds the humor, but I did have the same type of questions as Dave, about the rest of Japan. Is the damage limited to Honshu or are the other islands dealing with their own set of problems. Especially since supply chains have got to be a mess. How far down Honshu do you have to go, to where things are more "normal," that type of stuff.

Of course, I could be wrong. I certainly hope everything is fine there!

A client of mine was in Osaka when it hit, and I asked him if he felt it and he was like "OH yeah". I think everyone in Japan knew this was the big one!

Oh, sure. If the situation had been reversed and the huge catastrophe had happened in the southern regions of Japan, I would certainly be concerned about such things myself!

As it stands, as far as I know there was no historical or cultural buildings or sites damaged down South. To the North, as far as I know it's more along the lines of rural communities and villages, although I'm sure we'll be hearing many reports of loss up there not only of the thousands of lives lost and perhaps even millions of displaced people, but the loss too of special places and culturally significant areas that most of us aren't too aware of but soon will be. :(
