I didn't realize my mistake until I checked it and was very relieved it was just a general chatty e-note. When I think what it might have been, I realize that I should always have my wits about me when I press "Send."
My aunt called it a senior's moment.

A friend of mine accidentally came out as a gay man on a public email list when he meant to send the email to a friend. He had a wife and children.

My male friend's female boss sent him a very graphic text message by accident when she meant to send it to her husband.

And a group of friends and I received a "clothing optional" picture message from another friend she meant to send to someone else.

Each of those stories turned out ok and we all had a laugh. My gay friend was in the process of separating from his wife and his family already knew. My other friend who sent the picture was mildly embarrassed but not mortified. But there's definitely some horror stories out there of relationships ruined, jobs lost, etc. Always double-check before you hit "Send" or "Post."

Oh, the joys of instant communication :)

It turned out okay though, he called me to apologize and explained his vacation to Hawaii was the next day and his mind wasn't quite on his work.

Another time, one of our male employees sent and e-mail to a couple of girls in the office. It was *highly* suggestive and came to me as well as these young women...we had a little talk about company policies.

I've learned to be very careful about that auto-complete feature in the "To" line.

I'd never met his friends before and no one told me my male friend turned into an obnoxious jerk when he was around his guy friends! I was sitting in the cinema feeling entirely unimpressed and sent a text to a friend saying how bored I was. It was only when I got home and thought "I wonder why she didn't reply?" that I checked the text and realised I had in fact sent it to the female friend who was sitting right beside me... oops. I was embarrassed, but the next morning sent her an email, pretending I hadn't realised about the missent text, saying "sorry I was fairly quiet last night. I was really annoyed by the guys" and she wrote back "ME TOO!" Ah, deflection by complaining about others. The only other time I've done this was when I emailed a friend with in-depth details of the housewarming present I was buying her, including price. She wrote back "I don't think you meant to send this to me!"

A worse situation was my dad's business partner who received an email from a hopeless ex-employee requesting a reference. My dad's partner tried to forward the email on to Dad with a message saying "look at this, what a jerk!" (okay, "jerk" wasn't actually the word he used but I don't want to be admined) but accidentally hit reply instead, sending it to the guy who wanted the reference. Funnily, the ex-employee didn't ask again.

It was a "heart stopping" moment when I saw what was written and who else received it. It was all about how this person would love to get together with me but not so much the other person. We were able to explain it away as names weren't mentioned and second person lives in "la la land" :) All 3 of us ended up having lunch together, I mean after that you kinda have to :)

Another time my brother emailed to all the siblings why he couldn't come to a party. Turned out one sister wasn't invited. Boy howdy did that cause some quick "how can we fix this?" emails flying back and forth.
