Presumably they would want to highlight the new nighttime parade, since parades are the focus of the Christmas broadcast and they no longer have any pretense of a live show. If that's the case, it would probably be a lot easier for them to film it at night, when they have total control of the shoot, than trying to do it while guests are there. As it is, I think they only let guests in because there's no other way to film in daylight
