My understanding is that this is preparation for a redressing of the castle for the 25th. OLC are keen to make a big statement about the first quarter of a century after the 20th didn't hit the mark.

When I first read about the gold, I was worried that it was going to look too "bling," as I think the gold on DL's castle looks. TDL's looks much more dignified (and I understand that some of the stuff on DL's castle will be removed after the 50th celebration is over).
