I wouldn't even mind seeing the icon updated, maybe build some new piers for SSE to stand on. The paint job on the old ones is looking pretty 80s. But I think the actual sphere should be pretty well left alone.

Then they could easily change it out for the seasonal looks. It would be similar to the spot at Universal where you can get a shot of the Space Shuttle on top of the old Back to the Future building.

The difference between SSE and the Earful Tower is that the tower is by design a cartoony thing. Adding a hat at Christmas is a really nice touch. But Spaceship Earth is a beautiful, massive, one of a kind landmark that looks spectacular in its naked glory. To cartoonize it with a hat at any time of the year is right next to blasphemous!
