What really surprised me is how great the animation looks. I have really been impressed with the look of the last several Dreamworks efforts (KFP 1 & 2, and How To Train Your Dragon) and PIB doesn't dissappoint in the great animation department.

PIB is also clever and fast paced. All in all I would recommend it.

It's a nicety if the movie itself is good - or at least has some laughs - but mostly I enjoy the sumptuous beauty and depth of the 3D animation. If it comes through on that score, I'm a happy camper.

And I agree with you on Shrek 4 - sucked out loud. And it resorted to the old "evil twin" gambit - the cheesiest gimmick ever. I'm willing to give a bit more credit to Shrek 3 because it had an interesting plot with some surprising twists in the emotional motivation of the characters.

I've never seen either of the KFP movies - for some reason it just never looked like something I'd enjoy.

It is highly stylized and beautiful to look at, with humour, pathos and a wonderful message. In fact I would go so far to say lately the teamwork products are more appealing than Disney/pixar's

And Gad, I think that if what you are looking for is great 3D animation, PIB will deliver along with some clever dialog. It kinda bogs down in the middle (backstory exposition). But all in all PIB is a fun film. I wouldn't put it up against PIXAR's best. But for a spin off, Dreamworks put a lot more effort into it that a lot of Disney's spin off/ sequal efforts.

KFP 2 I'm not as enthused over, but it's still better than Cars 2.

As for Puss in Boots, ehh, notsomuch. Just as Cars 2 tested your tolerance level for Larry the Cable Guy, PiB tests your tolerance level for Jack Galifianakis. Mine's pretty low, it turns out.

Animation is gorgeous, and it has plenty of hilarious moments, but the story didn't bake quite long enough before they pulled it out of the oven. I can speak to this, having seen a test screening in June. They made MAJOR changes, especially to the third act. Final version is much improved, but plugging some of the old plot holes created new ones.

I'm just not into the whole Dreamworks psychodrama tendency. They had a wonderful and innovative movie going until Humpty Dumpty showed up and bogged things down with his neuroses.

But it's still better than Cars 2.

Puss's best line that didn't make the final cut (and I'm not sure if this is word-for-word, but it's close):
"Cat people are crazy. They took something that was precious to me as well. But it was of a more ... personal nature."

One more point, because there has been some trash talk of a movie that I thought was good:
    >>Shrek 4 ... resorted to the old "evil twin" gambit<<

You might be getting Shrek 4 confused with something else. Shrek 4's plot was an homage to It's a Wonderful Life, and I thought it was dramatically better than the fetid stinkpile that was Shrek 3. The alternate universe Shrek-land in 4 was totally character-driven, and a great, clever way to finish out the series, IMHO. Not a great movie, but certainly a good one. (And also better than Cars 2.)

Loved Puss in the Shrek movies (especially Shrek 2 which is still my favorite of the bunch), but hated the whole Humpty Dumpty storyline and character. Yes, the animation was stunning, but overall, the movie just felt more like "eh" to me and never really took off for me. Too bad as I thought it had potential, and Banderas is great in the role. I guess I was hoping more for a Zorro-type back story, since that is certainly how they portrayed Puss in the other films. Sadly, it just seemed to plod along, especially with HD. Geez, what a totally unappealing character, either as sympathetic or as a heavy. I certainly didn't hate the film, but it definitely didn't leave me wanting for more, either. Too bad, as PiB was one of the best characters in the Shrek universe.
