Are the super expensive vacuums worth it? The Dyson looks like it would be great, but is it worth the cost? Or should I just get the $150/$200 vacuums every 18 months?!

What are some of your suggestions? Help is needed! :)

I bought a Fantom Twister about 2 years ago. Cost $179.95

Didn't do very well. Lost suction, and the bagless thing was really messy and dusty. Had it about a year.

Saw the commercial for the Oreck XL. Bought one from QVC. $375.00 or so.

After about 3 days, had to return it because smoke started coming out of the motor. Not good. QVC has a great return policy. Got a new Oreck -- same model.

I've had this Oreck for just over a year. 2 days ago, it's starts smoking out of the motor vent. I don't mess around with smoke and electricity and appliances. Back to QVC it went yesterday -- I'm getting a refund.

At Costco yesterday, saw the Dyson DC-14 -- $469.95.

In my twisted head, I figure, I'm getting a refund from QVC for the Oreck, so I'm paying an extra $100.00 to get a Dyson.

I've always wanted one of these Dyson vacuums. And it's done great so far. It is a bagless, and there is some dust factor when emptying out the canister, but I have to say, it was sucking like crazy yesterday, and we got a lot of junk out of that carpet.

    We'll see.

It was a Consumer Reports Best Buy and I got it for a decent price at Walmart. (don't remember what I paid though, sorry.) It does a really good job and is a cinch to use - attachments well thought out and all on board. Good luck.

I started out with the yellow model, I now have the blue/purple one, we call it the buzz lightyear model. My niece has my yellow one and it still is going strong. I see they've come out with another type, but I'm happy with the one I have. for now. I have cats and birds and my vacuums get a workout every day.

I love the rotating brush attachment it cleans the cat hair off furniture really well, just don't press down on it to hard. The wand may be awkward for some because of how it is stored and attaches, but once you get the hang of it it's great. We are able to keep the unit at the bottom of the stairs and can vacuum the stairs with out lugging the whole thing up. Emptying the canister is a cinch we just hold it over the outside garbage bag and push the release, it empties from the bottom. The machine really sucks! :)

Con: you have to find storage for some of the attachments.

    Thanks for the help!

But after I added in the hassle factor, and the fact that I spent $180.00 -- and then $375.00 and neither of them work, I'm hoping Mr. Dyson can keep his promise.

I used it again this morning, and it worked beautifully.

    Just some food for thought!

We now have a Eureka 12amp clearview bagless that we got not quite 2years ago when we moved down to Anaheim. You need to be consistant with emptying the dust bin when it's full, (especially with furry friends shedding their fur in the carpet) and other than slight breathing issues i've had emptying it.. it's been great. no bags, just keep it clean. =) I like not having bags to buy.. it's worth it.

I have a small bagless, but I'm always leary of emptying it as I tend to get some of the dust in the air all over again and I have one son with bad alergies.

Do you guys think it would be a problem with the Dyson? And my DH wants to get me a Roomba (sp?) since I'm always vacuuming hair up off the floor.

My girlfriend prefers to do the vacuuming, and keeps me away from it. She claims I put marks on the walls. Sheesh.

I don't know if ours was the cheapo version or not, but my Mom *still* has a working Hoover that I can never remember NOT having. Not sure how much the bags run her, but she's literally had it as long as I can remember and it still works great!

Yes, Hoover's are good. My mom swore by them. And I had one forever before I got the Oreck.
