But what Christy and Kevin Hoss' kids, ages 12, 9 and 7, anticipated most was a side trip to Legoland. When the Hosses and three members of Christy's Southland family arrived at the western San Diego County tourist attraction, the inland fires were growing. A sign at Legoland said "CLOSED." "We had a lot of tears at first," said Christy, who's a teaching assistant at Kenwood School. The party of eight pow-wowed and the four adults concluded, and the kids accepted, that as an alternate they'd drive up to the Lego store outside of Disneyland. Their budget just wouldn't allow a visit to the Magic Kingdom. Inside the Lego store, a cell phone rang and Christy's sister told their fretting mother in Minnesota the fires posed no danger to them, but they'd kiboshed the trip to Legoland. A stranger overhead the conversation. She told the Hoss clan she had some Disneyland tickets left over from her daughter's wedding party and she was looking for just the right people to offer them to. The lady had two $91 tickets. She saw the Hoss party numbered eight. She walked to a ticket window, then handed Christy and her clan eight tickets worth more than $700. Christy said she wished them all their happiest Disneyland day ever. More tears!"
