The Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe's proposal calls for two opulent casinos housing 7,500 slot machines, two upscale hotels, a 10,000-seat stadium and — the topper— a promise of a college scholarship for every high school graduate in Garden Grove. The plan, submitted to the city this week, also promises $5.1 billion to the city over 30 years, payment of $100 million for infrastructure improvements within the city and nearly 10,000 permanent jobs. "Everybody knows Disneyland is a huge tourist attraction and so are big Indian casinos," said Jonathan Stein, who identifies himself as the CEO of the tribe. "Casinos just generate gobs and gobs of money, and everyone is going to benefit from this."<<

With these huge plans that they keep creating, I doube anything will ever happen.

They attempted to rip-off certain aspects of Disneyland. For example, there was an indoor roller coaster in the dark that even used the only SM blue paint on the queue railings, too bad it was THE most boring roller coaster on the planet. And a Jungle Cruise-style boat ride through a Hollywood back-lot. There was a non-themed flume ride and pretty good river rapids-type innertube ride, along with some other stuff and stunt shows. It could have been grand (pardon the pun) but they didn't put enough $$ into it. As it was, it was okay fun for a one-shot deal. Nobody cared if they made it back a second time. Bottomline, the stereotypical Las Vegas (as opposed to the "community" where I work and live - though we all benefit) does a great job marketing the naughtier side of "Sin City" along with the great entertainment, gambling, and gourmet restaurants to adults. We rule the adult scene, just as Disney rules the scene for children - of all ages. There are tribal casinos available all over... I just don't think people care about that stuff when they're in Anaheim. If they do the Disneyland Resort properly - they won't have the feet or energy left for casinos, anyway. *LOL*

Even with that, think of all the cries of "not in my backyard!!" from residents of Garden Grove. I know a few years ago a developer in the city was prevented from creating luxury housing because nearby homeowners (in their schlumpy, outdated houses, no less!) complained that his houses would be too big. And then there's the matter of legal challenges to non-poker gambling existing in areas of Calif located far outside well-documented tribal lands.

Friends of mine from Baltimore visited recently for their first time and brought along their 12-year-old son. I helped them plan in advance for him and he had a blast. They went to Hoover Dam and did the tour, Red Rock Canyon, Gameworks, Lance Burton, the coaster at NY NY, the "LOVE" Cirque show at the Mirage (where they were staying) and more... and enjoyed the pool every day. Oh... And the parents didn't gamble at all and still had a wonderful time. ;-) Just because we're not Sin Disney anymore doesn't mean the kids stopped coming with their parents. You still see tons of them, including stroller-age. It IS marketed to adults, as it should be. And yes, the town was built on tourist's gambling dollars - not like that's a big secret or anything. ;-) People come here and gamble, or not. Some have a 'problem' with it and probably shouldn't even visit. But most budget their gambling as part of the "entertainment" expense. And they have FUN!

Its not like this is even some tribal land that is being developed; it looks the the usual big casino syndicate paying off an Indian tribe to use their name skirt gamming laws. Obviously, even though prostitution is illegal in Clark County, NV (Las Vegas' "home"... Pahrump, which is 60 miles away and the home to legal and heavily-regulated brothels, is in Nye County), it definitely is an issue here - the term "Escort Service" is a laugh. I would think that THAT possibility alone would be enough to shut down the project in OC. On another aside, that Gentleman's Club we all drive past on the way to DLR... I'm assuming arrests are made on occasion...?
Originally Posted By RoadTrip <<On the redlight district concern... karlg and or Lisa, do you guys know if this is an issue at other tribal-run casinos?>> It certainly is not an issue in Minnesota. There are probably two reasons for this. 1) Minnesotans are too cheap to pay for sex. 2) The primary demographic at Minnesota Tribal casinos is the little old lady gambling away her Social Security check. That said, the Minnesota casinos are very well run and are probably a better place for a low-roller to gamble than the Vegas casinos. Of course Vegas is better at almost anything else, so there really is no contest.
