The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2007/08 Nominees are: Afrika Bambaataa Beastie Boys Chic Leonard Cohen Dave Clark Five Madonna John Mellencamp Donna Summer The Ventures Of those nine nominees, the top FIVE vote-getters will be inducted. Who do you think SHOULD win? Who do you think WILL win?

They have been so inventive and have some of the most hysterical rap out there ever. I know I'll be a minority but snooze on the Dave Clark Five. Whatever. I'm not a fan of the English Invasion. So I want Afrika, Madonna, Donna, John M and the Beastie Boys. It'll probably be Leonard Cohen, Dave Clark Five, Madonna, John Cougar and I believe even Donna.

I appreciate what Chic did to bring more interesting poly-rhythms to the world of dance music, transitioning it from the by-then dull as dishwater 4-on-the-floor disco, but I don't know that their body of work qualifies for Hall status either. Rogers is a genius producer, but Chic as a group? Not a fan of either diva, but you can't deny the sales. My guess is that the two divas, John M., Cohen, and Afrika get in. If I were a voter, I'd vote for John, Afrika, possibly Cohen - and then wish there were more choices this year!

Originally Posted By Inspector 57 My PERSONAL votes: Afrika Bambaataa: YES. For the reasons Lisa stated. A major influence on a new type of music. Beastie Boys: YES. Clever and fresh -- and they've developed as a group as they've aged. They'll be around for a long time. And as above... a major influence on a new type of music. Chic: God, NO. Nile Rogers deserves an Award for the body of work he's produced, which INCLUDES Chic. But while Chic had a great new sound, ever Chic song had that SAME sound. And disposable lyrics. Blech. (BTW, am I the only one who loved what Rogers did with/to/for Bowie?) Leonard Cohen: NO. Great lyricist. Not a rocker. Dave Clark Five: NO. I'm taking personal artistic perrogative here. Just don't have use for them. Madonna: YES! Her early work was SO lightweight. But she used her popularity as a feminist force. And she became the absolute model for using the new "video" medium. Further, she led the way into the 80's-and-beyond paradigm of "overall entertainer as celeb," vs. "singer as celeb." AND she's developed as an artist as the years have passed. She's pushed the envelope. She's modeled -- and fought for -- the acceptance of diversity. She still writes the same crappy lyrics. But she takes risks. She entertains. She challenges. She embodies the "rock'n'roll" spirit. John Mellencamp: Hell, YES!!! Absolutely. Donna Summer: Surprisingly, this is a hard one for me. I think she deserves a place in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Not that she's a Rocker. I'm glad (for the wrong reasons) she got the Rock Grammy for "Hot Stuff" -- but I don't buy it for a second. "Hot Stuff" was not rock. And neither is she. IMHO, she's nominated because she REPRESENTS an important era in popular music. This is sort of the Hall of Fame's nod to the legitimacy of disco. But I don't think that's a good reason to give her an award. Donna was/is a WONDERFUL vocalist, and she wrote much of her popular stuff, but... the disco music for which she's most known was mostly the work of the producers. It seems almost more fair that they give an Award to the Casablanca crew. But if they mean this in a more all-encompassing way... Donna is an amazing talent. So MUCH of the stuff she's done since she was the Disco Queen is SO much more impressive than most of the disco stuff, IMHO. She's been nominated before. I'd like her to win this year and for it to be a nod to her LIFETIME contributions, not just to "Love To Love You" and "Hot Stuff." The Ventures: UMMMMMM... We need a surf group in the HOF. But don't we already have one? Were the Ventures influential? or just popular? I honestly don't know. So I, myself, personally, as an individual, would vote for: Afrika Bambaataa; Beastie Boys; John (Cougar) Mellencamp; Madonna; Donna Summer. I think the Awards will go to: Afrika Bambaataa; John Mellencamp; Madonna; Donna Summer; Ventures.

"Cold Love" anyone? Or how about a little Gospel? DONNA got two of those gospel Grammys...you know? But I agree that is represents the Disco era...and for that, she will always be "branded". But you know as well as I do that DONNA can take on almost any musical style and nail it.

DONNA, who lives in Nashville TN, has been known to sing some of country's most notable hits live... like "Stand By your Man" and back in the day, she did a country medley with Eddie Rabbit on the Grammy's.. Plus, she has written at least one conutry song for Reba McEntire...which she has also performed live in concert, and I have that audio in my hard drive for you to enjoy. So you can kill yourself now BlueDevil.
