There's about a hundred episodes but I've only seen the first season, which is really a great serial drama/comedy that has a continuous storyline. The ending of each episode really makes you want to rush and watch the next one. Be careful though. If you watch the first episode and hear the main character's manager referred to as a agent and not a "pimp," you are watching the wrong translation. Some releases changed "pimp" to agent despite the fact that it's a huge plot point in the middle of the first season. Just more politically correct BS. Basically the show is about a child star who is way too into being famous.

My all time faves from the more "anime-y" side of anime are Urusei Yatsura (before Mamoru Oshii quits and it jumps the shark), Love Hina (of course), Excel Saga (probably not for newbies), Maison Ikkoku, and anything involving Ikuko Ito (Magic Users Club, Princess Tutu, and the episodes of Sailor Moon that are really well drawn and animated). I really liked Dead Leaves too, but it's super-mega-ultra-sick-violent, so approach with caution. The following older features can be hard to find but are well worth seeking out: The Little Norse Prince a/k/a Hols, Prince of the Sun Panda and the Magic Serpent Sea Prince and the Fire Child Jack and the Witch Fairy Florence a/k/a A Journey to Fairyland (caution: dub is horrendous) Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon Belladonna of Sorrow (X-rated art film - nothing else like it under the sun) And if you're into Miyazaki, you MUST dig up the following non-anime movies, which can often be found in dollar stores: The Snow Queen The Curious Adventures of Mr. Wonderbird Once you've seen those two (and Panda and the Magic Serpent), you know exactly where Miyazaki is coming from. Disclaimer: I didn't like Fruits Basket, but being a hetrosexual male, I wasn't exactly its target audience.

Everything from Studio Ghibli is good, and most of it is great, with the glaring exception of Tales of Earthsea, which is awful. The best of the non-Miyazaki part of the catalog includes Whisper of the Heart (one of my favorite movies, period), Only Yesterday (mysteriously unreleased in the US, DISNEY), and Grave of the Fireflies (which is devastatingly sad and will ruin your week - approach with caution).
