If I hadn't been reading fantasy for years, the themes of the book would have been newer, and I would have probably enjoyed it more. As a starter book for younger readers I think it's great before they graduate into page monsters like A Song of Ice and Fire or The Wheel of Time. I'll give the movie a chance, but I haven't got my hopes up.

It wasn't as good as either>> The problem with most fantasy books is that a lot of them tend to focus on the same template that was set by Lord of the Rings and even Star Wars copied it. The evil empire that threatens the land and only a simple farm boy who's can save the world. And on his way there's a kind of a dashing rogue, a fiesty princess and other odd sorts of characters. Now LOTR did it best. I haven't read the Fire and Ice or Wheel of Time Series. Fire and Ice I hear is quite good, though each book is about a 1000 pages and I really have to devote a lot of time to that. I've heard the Wheel of Time series completely loses it after book 5. A newer fantasy series I recommend is the Temarie series. Take the setting of Master and Commander and combine it with dragons and it's quite good.

My son read the books a while ago, and just started rereading the first one. The movie definitely cut a lot out, and streamlined a lot. I think they could have had it run a little longer, and included a bit more. I particularly think they shortchanged the relationship between Eragon and Murtogh. And it was weird that they never mentioned that Arya was an elf, and didn't show any dwarves amongst the Varden. Still, it was decently acted, and the dragon looked good.
