I believe it was highly successful over there (it ran into the 90s when Bill Clinton and Tony Blair were added), but not too well over here. It usually poked fun at the Royal Family as well. In the late 80s, Sid and Marty Krofft tried their hand at "D.C. Follies," which used their *own* puppets in a bar setting with Fred Willard as host/bartender. Here are the three NBC specials: -Down and Out in the White House: Sylvester Stallone and a newcomer named "Samuel Samuelson" run for the Presidency of the United States. David Frost makes an appearance at the end. -The Ron and Nancy Show: It's the Reagans' wedding anniversary, and they're having a huge party! Of course Ronnie makes a slight error when he gets the room service and nuclear hotline phones mixed up. -The 1987 Movie Awards: The most prestigious event of the year is almost sabotaged by "serious" actor Leonard Nimoy. David Frost appears as host and reveals the winners at the end of the show.

There was also a local show here in the San Francisco Bay Area called "Evening Magazine", and about twenty years ago my dad taped an episode that, I guess, featured international commercials or something. Anyway, it the commercial for Chiclets gum featuring SI puppets of Charles and Diana, the latter in constant changing outfits. In fact, all the Spitting Image specials and DC Follies episodes were put on one tape, and that tape is actually in my room as we speak, lol. A few years ago I downloaded an SI clip featuring the Royal Family preparing to play Monopoly... without Queen Elizabeth. Charles goes to look for the game when Liz pops in, and just as she's about to leave, Charles comes back with the game. The punchline was that Elizabeth had to be introduced to ALL of the players and shake their hands, before the start of the game. This clip was probably after Charles and Diana had divorced as she is mentioned, but not seen.
