I haven't heard yet if both effects worked on Thursday night. Oh, and on another site the discussion about him vs. her almost came to blows, with one side insisting the dragon be referred to as "she", and the other side correctly pointing out that the dragon is actually a hunk of metal and programming. Pretty funny to read!

Which would also be a she. I just don't get why people insist on calling the dragon a 'he'. Call it a 'she' or an 'it', but why must everybody say 'he'?

If you don't stop to think about the mythology and the fact that this new dragon is actually Malificent, if you're thinking of just this new hunk of metal, it's easy to think of it as a he. Many people have pointed out that it's just as bad as referring to Mickey as a she, which of course seems silly. So FA, you're absolutely correct that the new dragon is a she. I just don't get why people are getting so worked up over it.
