Not that I was a HUGE fan of the other 2, but I enjoyed them and I just thought this could have been a lot better. The thing I was looking forward to the most was Venom coming into it, and that didn't happen until nearly 2 hours in, so that was disappointing. Between love triangles (or squares?), discovering the "real" killer of Uncle Ben, and the three villains as well as Peter's troubled friendship with Harry, the movie just tried to squeeze in way too much. Some of the best parts were really reduced, while some parts went on for far too long. (Yes, I'm referring to Tobey dancing on the street). I guess this is why I generally prefer the comics to the movies - comics can fit in as many storylines as they like without a two-hour time frame.

Not being an insider, I didn't know who the old man was that Peter was talking to in Times Square, when about a third of the audience laughed I figured he must be someone special. I made a guess and I guessed right...they show his name in the credits. (Most of you Spidey fans probably already know about that spoiler, though.)

Oh, and Stan Lee's appearance got a pretty big laugh in my audience. For those who don't know, he was the creator of Spiderman, and his big catch-phrase is "'Nuff said!". I really enjoyed seeing him again. :)

Marvel Films Bylaw number one: Stan Lee is to make an appearance in any Marvel Film in which the character was created by Stan Lee.

Not a bad popcorn movie -- but they showed the trailers for both the next Harry Potter film and Pirates 3 before the movie and both of those looked like they are going to blow this one out of the water.

It's a triple threat: disjointed, overlong, and completely unfocussed. Good thing it is getting a record breaking opening weekend. I will be surprised if it does not fall off steeply due to negative word of mouth.

Here now are how I would rate films based on material found previously in comics:

    First DC

    Superman (1978) A
    Superman II (1980) A
    Superman III (1983 D
    Supergirl (1984)F

    Road to Perdition (2002)A
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)D
    Catwoman (2004)F
    Constantine (2005)C
    Batman Begins (2005)A+
    A History of Violence (2005)C
    V for Vendetta (2006)A
    Superman Returns (2006)B+

    Then Marvel:

    Blade (1998)C-
    X-Men (2000)B
    Blade II (2002)C+
    Spider-Man (2002)A-
    Daredevil (2003)D+
    X2: X-Men United (2003)A

    Fantastic Four (2005)C+
    X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)B
    Ghost Rider (2007)D
    Spider-Man 3 (2007)B

Then some alternate comic book properties:

    Hellboy (2003)C+
    Sin City (2005)A
    300 (2007) A

I think my favorite gag was the secretary paging Jameson - classic slapstick! And while the effects were done pretty well, I still don't think the technology is quite there to totally replace a stunt person with a digital copy, which is exactly what a lot of the high-flying chase sequences were. You could easily tell when it was really a human and when it wasn't. The Sandman effects, on the other hand, were really spectacular.

Thing is, I KNEW this would happen based on what I learned over the past year or so. It suffered from some of the same things that plagued the Batman movies from "Batman Forever" on.

The Gwen Stacy character was totally wasted; she should have been in the first or not at all.

(For those not familiar with the comic book, Gwen was Peter's girlfriend for a while. She was pushed off a bridge by the Green Goblin. Peter tried to save her by catching her with his webbing, but she was dead before she would have hit the water. Her neck had been snapped, and Peter thought he was responsible for that. That is, of course, if that backstory hasn't been retconned.)

It was slow moving for me and I found myself looking at the watch several times. It didn't help that there was a family of kids right behind us were loud, talking and kept kicking our seats. On top of that, they brought a baby that started crying about an hour into and rather than taking the baby out so that the rest of the sold out theater could enjoy this, they chose to stay. I understand about taking kids because I had 4 with me but they sat still and were very careful about the seats in front of them. If you bring a baby (and I did when my kids were little), please take them out into the lobby until they calm down....

    1) Terrible script; full of schmultz and sugar which gave the actors nothing to work with at all. A case in point of when directors should stay directors and not interfere with the writing (Alvin Sargeant had done a pretty good job on the second on his own after all).

    2) Too colour-by-numbers: Peter turns bad and starts wearing black and having his hair over his face. Very original. Eddie loses his job at his own hand and says he wants God to kill Peter Parker? Please. Everything was so black-and-white in this one which made you really appreciate the grey areas that Doc Octopus occupied for much of the second one.

    3) Superfluous villains: Sandman was a waste of time. Added nothing except that awful backstory of a dying kid to make us feel compassion for him. He had the worse dialogue by far and poor Haden Church had absolutely nothing to work with except his rather square jaw muscles and a few eyebrow raises. The movie would have been totally sufficient with just the son of the Green Goblin and the excellent Venom. That whole story of the symbiote, Peter's descent into "evil" from just egotistical(which obviously only consisted of him dancing on tables - you naughty boy) and Eddie's desire for revenge (not really sufficient to draw a line between those points really) should have been the crux dovetailed perfectly with Harry's obsession with his dead father.

    4) Unoriginal and often cringeworthy: The ending in particular. MJ is in trouble. Yawn. Oh and it needs to be a construction site too so we have sand. Right. Plus why did we need all of that awful TV commentary about Spidey saving our civilisation (when in fact it was just MJ, Spidey and the two villains at risk?). I haven't heard so many groans during a flick like this for years. The cheesy lines and those long longing shots were just too much it seemed.

I honestly thought that little of it worked. I loved JB's comments about a movie made by committee as I can totally see that. I can imagine Sony, Marvel and Raimi tweaking it to death to make sure it hits all the right numbers. If you are going to go dark you need to go dark. It would work if you just flash a shadow over the character.

I guess my disappointment was that it had so much promise and didn't really deliver on any level. I also found the physical violence of this one very jarring indeed. I don't remember feeling like that in the second one. The two scenes I did enjoy a great deal were Peter's fight with the symbiote in the church (and the "fallout") and the demise of Venom (which I didn't see coming at all).

Thankfully the trailer for At World's End made me happy. Even Potter (for someone that doesn't like those movies at all) looked intriguing.

Agreed! I enjoyed her for the scenes that she was in, but when the movie finished I thought that there was so little of her, they might as well not have bothered.
