When the Academy's Board of Governors voted on a handful of rule changes in June, one of the most significant was an overhaul in the nomination procedure for the Original Song category. Whereas in the past members of the music branch were expected to seek out and listen to the eligible songs, the new format called for members to meet, listen to all the contenders, and then vote on the spot — a similar process to the so-called "bake-offs" used in the visual effects, sound editing and makeup categories.

Earlier this week, some published reports claimed the academy was still undecided about how to stage the song presentations. One option, the reports suggested, was a single live performance each night — a process that would have been unwieldy, to say the least, considering some 40 songs are eligible this year.

In fact, academy executive director Bruce Davis confirmed late Wednesday that the format has been set, very much in the way that is spelled out by the voting rules. On Jan. 17, a digital reel containing film clips that feature all the eligible songs (in random order, naturally) will be screened at the academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater; after each song, voters will be given a moment to score the song on a scale of 6 to 10. (Half points are allowed.)

It'll make for a long evening, and a potentially enervating one if those treacly ballads start piling. But in a way, inclusiveness is the whole idea. "The hope," says Davis, "is to make it easier for music branch members to be certain that they've seen and heard the entire field of contenders."

No live performances will be involved; the only possible change, says Davis, is that the presentation may be repeated the following week if enough branch members want to vote but can't attend the initial program.

And by the way, the visual, sound and makeup folks may have adopted the title bake-off for their events — in which nominees not only show their work, but also speak on its behalf — but the music branch is adamantly resisting the moniker. So remember: it's a nomination screening, not a bake-off.

40 songs eligible? Can't think of many:

Both "Who’s Minding The Store?" from "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway" from "The Producers" are likely nominees.

The only other ones that come to mind are the novelty songs "Wonka's Welcome Song" from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" from "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", plus "One Little Slip" from "Chicken Little".

    Any others ...?
