To the dismay of all of the Imagineers working on the submarine project, the water was quickly determined to be coming from the lagoon plumbing located under the submarine loading dock. Since the operation of the filtration plant was the only thing that had changed that day, the plant was shut down on a hunch and slowly the water drained away. In the aftermath they discovered a little design flaw that will obviously set the already tight construction schedule back indefinitely. It seems that someone used an inaccurate schematic last year and capped off an underground pipe that was thought to go to an unused storm drain. But it turns out that pipe was actually an inbound line leading from the filtration plant that brought freshly filtered water directly back into the lagoon. When the newly beefed up filtration plant was turned on Thursday, it sent thousands of gallons of pressurized water through that pipe and the newly installed cap was quickly blown off. The pipe poured a huge amount of water underground at the base of the Monorail station. The Monorail elevator shaft was filled with silt and water, flooding the elevator and an underground electrical room nearby. Eventually the water breached the surface and began flooding the north end of Tomorrowland, until the water flow was shut off at the filtration plant. On Friday an army of Glendale Imagineers rushed to the site to assess the damage and begin the task of figuring out what it will take to fix this plumbing problem. Will the lagoon need to be drained? Will the loading area and entrance to the Monorail station need to be torn out to restore the outflow of the broken pipe back to the lagoon? And if the lagoon is drained for any length of time how will they make up for lost testing of the timing and new effects? Those are questions still trying to be answered as you read this, and the grand opening deadline of June 11th is what's at stake here. Right now I wouldn't plan anything based on that date, and quite frankly neither should you.<<

In addition to surprise "dream-come-true" experiences -- more than 300,000 in California and Florida since "The Year of a Million Dreams" began on October 1 -- guests at Disneyland Resort in Southern California will discover a new pirate hideaway, plus amazing new attractions starring Disney*Pixar characters from Finding Nemo and, in 2008, from Toy Story. There are also newly remixed rock n' roll soundtracks added to the popular Space Mountain and California Screamin' experiences. Extensive enhancements will bring a rousing "Pirate's Lair" to Tom Sawyer Island in Disneyland's Frontierland beginning in May. Building upon the hands-on play and exploration that have made the island a popular experience for children and adults for the past 50 years. "Pirate's Lair at Tom Sawyer Island" will take its inspiration from Tom and Huck's pirate games in the classic Mark Twain story, as well as from the renewed interest in pirates generated by the "Pirates of the Caribbean" attraction and motion pictures. The attraction's opening will coincide with the summer opening of Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Fun and interactive surprises will be encountered throughout "Pirate's Lair at Tom Sawyer Island" and will include pirate details added to Tom & Huck's Treehouse and to the traditional Smuggler's Cove, with its fun and challenging rope and barrel bridges. Among the other adventures to be found on the island will be a "Dead Man's Grotto" in the island caverns, a "Pirate's Den" on the familiar Castle Rock, and opportunities to search for buried treasure while encountering live pirates. The "Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage" will arrive in Tomorrowland on June 11, combining another classic Disneyland attraction -- the Submarine Voyage which debuted in 1959 -- with new special effects and storytelling techniques. With the seamless integration of Audio-Animatronics characters, all new sets, and innovative imaging technology, submarine voyagers will embark on an undersea journey to observe an underwater volcano, encountering Nemo and his friends, from the Disney*Pixar film Finding Nemo, along the way. Disney*Pixar characters will also appear in a new Disney's California Adventure attraction, scheduled to open in 2008. Construction has already begun on "Toy Story Mania!" in the Paradise Pier district of the park. It will mark the first time an attraction has been designed and built simultaneously at Disneyland Resort and at Walt Disney World, where "Toy Story Mania!" will open at the Disney-MGM Studios. The attraction will have a 2008 opening at both the California and Florida parks. "Toy Story Mania!" will set a new standard for the interactive ride/game technology pioneered in the "Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters" attraction. Guests of all ages will don 3-D glasses and hop into fancifully decorated "Toy Story Mania!" vehicles. While riding along a colorful, midway-themed route, they will shoot at animated targets using their own "toy cannons," scoring points in a series of energetic, fun gaming sequences featuring Woody, Bo Peep and the rest of the gang from Toy Story. With "The Year of a Million Dreams" underway, two favorite Disneyland Resort attractions are already singing a different tune. Specially remixed rock n' roll soundtracks have been added to both Space Mountain in Disneyland and California Screamin' in Disney's California Adventure. The new audio will continue "Rockin' Both Parks" through April 26. "Rockin' Both Parks," "Pirate's Lair at Tom Sawyer Island" and "Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage" are just some of the highlights of "The Year of a Million Dreams" celebration at Disneyland Resort in Southern California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. (Jan. 26, 2007) / PRNewswire / — To launch Disney Parks "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration, spectacular new images were unveiled today featuring the work of acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz, and starring Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyoncé taking a spin in a giant teacup and David Beckham slaying a dragon. Leibovitz's images also fulfill one of Beckham's "dreams," as the Disney Parks project is his first endorsement since signing a contract to play professional soccer in the United States. In addition to the three debut images, Disney Parks has commissioned more images by Leibovitz that will feature other celebrities in classic, Disney fairy tale settings. "I'm really delighted to be part of the 'Where Dreams Come True' campaign," said Leibovitz. "We live in difficult times and I feel, especially as a parent, that keeping dreams alive is one of the most important things we can do." Each image features a scene with the featured celebrities transformed into the role of a fabled Disney character, expressing their own dreams and imagination. As Cinderella, Scarlett Johansson is seen running down a flight of stairs as the clock strikes midnight with her glass slipper unknowingly left behind. The tagline reads, "Where every Cinderella story comes true." Befitting a true princess, Johansson wears a stunning, one-of-a-kind Harry Winston tiara – a dazzling piece in platinum with more than 62 carats of sparkling diamonds and valued at $325,000. The dress worn by Johansson is a custom-made, Cinderella-inspired gown designed by Nicoletta Santoro. David Beckham plays the part of the gallant Prince Phillip from "Sleeping Beauty," atop his trusted steed fighting the evil dragon. The tagline reads, "Where imagination saves the day." "There were many Disney characters I liked as a kid," said Beckham. "Now my sons love the Disney characters and it's a big part of their lives, a big part of many children's lives around the world. So to be part of that is an honor and very exciting. "I love going to Disney, I'm like a big kid," he added. Beyoncé appears as "Alice in Wonderland," twirling in a teacup, accompanied by Oliver Platt as the Mad Hatter and Lyle Lovett as the March Hare. The tagline reads, "Where Wonderland is your destiny." "It's two great imaginations coming together – Disney and Annie Leibovitz," said Lovett. "To be along for the ride really is quite something, just knowing that you're going to be part of a great Disney character. And then when you step into the imagination of Annie Leibovitz, you know you're in another world." "The 'Where Dreams Come True' campaign is about the imaginations and dreams that are inside us all," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "By capturing these transformational experiences, these emotional images communicate a powerful concept. Working with Annie Leibovitz was a natural fit – Disney is known for immersive storytelling and Annie is a masterful artist whose photos speak volumes." The campaign premieres as a special insert in the March issues of Vanity Fair, GQ, Vogue, W, The New Yorker, Conde Nast Traveler and Cookie. As part of the "Where Dreams Come True" initiative, Disney Parks introduced "The Year of a Million Dreams" (Oct. 1, 2006-Dec. 31, 2007). During this 15-month, first-of-its-kind celebration, more than one million very special dreams are being granted to guests visiting Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The celebration also is highlighted by the debut of innovative Disney attractions and entertainment spectaculars at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts.
