These types of shows became known as 'Soap Operas' because ths Soap Companies loved them to advertise to housewives who were home during daytime doing housework. Women would turn on the radio while completing their chores. This naturally came over to TV, as the Soaps became the primary afternoon TV entertainment (along with game shows). Now there are so many more television channels with so many more choices - Talk shows, so-called Reality shows, game shows, full half-hour paid advertorials, etc. It's amazing the full hour daytime soap drama has lasted as long as it has.
