Since I'm her bridesmaid and was feeling energetic at the time, I put my hand up to organise her work celebration. I got as far as deciding the theme would be "Mr and Mrs Smith" (as in the movie), and decided I would organise the rest later. Well, now it's later and I'm really no further. It's going to be a cocktail party. I've created the invitations - a Mr and Mrs Smith movie poster with the bride and groom's faces on Angelina and Brad's bodies. I'll also be creating a wall-sized movie poster with their faces on it. After that, I'm kind of out of ideas, not helped by the fact that I haven't actually seen the movie since it was at the cinemas and I know I won't have time to watch it before I need to plan!

So, are there any expert party planners out there with great ideas for me? The main area I'm having trouble with is decorations, although if there's any particular ideas for food, games or anything else, that would be great! I've been teasing my friend about the "mystery theme" for a couple of months now, so I sort of feel like I should maybe have more theme-related stuff than just the invitations and posters...

Oh, and even if it's not Mr and Mrs Smith themed specifically and just generally movie-themed, that would be fine too, I think! I don't know if anyone will be able to help, but if you can I'll be eternally grateful! :)

So I typed 'Mr and Mrs Smith Theme Party' into google... a few link for parties that are not at all work appropriate came up! But sadly not a lot of great ideas..

I haven't watched the movie in a few months but all I remember is a lot of typical spy movie cliches... formal attire, silver guns and large explosions (also some pretty violent intimate moments, but again, not work appropriate)

So I am thinking perhaps, black and white colour scheme.. black table clothes, white plates, black napkins... black and white balloons (try get the classier pearly ones) etc.. you're not in Victoria so you don't need to worry about it looking like a Collingwood party.... I know those items are all generic to any theme but at least a colour scheme is a good start.. Plus no matter what I google, I can't find any better ideas..

If you have a Lombards nearby I know they recently hard large cardboard cut out guns.. I think they were meant for a James Bond style party but they could work? Actually, I believe spotlight had them too. If you have a Spotlight with a party store you should just go there and I am sure you will find something. Their stock is unbelievable..

We ordered a lot of stuff from them for my Dad's Independence Day themed 50th last year.. I think they ship from Sydney but a lot cheaper than most party stores and the stuff arrived pretty quickly..

I hope some of this has been even a little useful..

Yeah I tried googling too and came up with similarly little.

You don't think the nun I work with would like that? Hehe! Yeah, I don't think we'll be taking the theme that far. We'll be doing a "wedding dance" though and I definitely remember a dancing scene in the movie, although again, maybe a little more risque than we'll be getting with our male co-workers...

If you need a game to get things going you could try the old favorite of putting names on people's backs (with the theme of movie couples) and have them have to work out who they are, but with the added twist that once they know who they are they have to find their Husband or Wife. So Morticia Addams would be looking for Gomez, Cinderella is looking for Prince Charming etc. That might help to set the tone, even if other areas are a little more generic!!!

I like the fun theming famous couples idea. If you don't want to match them on peoples backs maybe clue cards that people need to match at each table or names on the balloons. Famous couples to love idea.

If going to play games, maybe play poisonious darts with their faces as the bullseye.

You could um, well, have crime scenes body sketches that are of mating positions.

Serve drinks with titles and in cups that look like little grenades or pill bottles - the wedding bomb, prescription for love, etc.

    I'll think of more...

So maybe, you can decorate with a curled silver ribbon, cord or even crepe paper with larger silver circles on the ends. I hope I described correctly.

It would take you all of an hour-and-a-half to watch the movie! So just watch it already!

Oh, wait. If YOU haven't seen it, chances are that many or most of the guests haven't seen it, either. So it may not be worth that 90-minute investment of time.

In fact, you might want to plan the invites / announcements / decor / activities in such a way that folks who are completely unfamiliar with the film don't go all "Huh?!" when they walk into the shower.

Maybe send them a link to a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" YouTube movie trailer as part of a reminder message for the party.

And seriously, you know that party confetti you put on tables? They had princesses, pirates, unicorns, but not a single gun anywhere! What's wrong with this world? Anyway, I decided to go with a black and silver theme.

Haha! I know you're right, but honestly at this point in time, an hour and a half is pretty valuable! And I have seen it, just not for years. At this stage the theme's pretty non-specific, so I don't think it's going to confuse anyone who hasn't seen the movie. (Well, we sent out the invitations today and it DID confuse a few people who didn't know the groom's surname was Smith...)
