The producers said it is now much easier for them to bring it to a conclusion than it was when they didn't know if it was going one more season or six more.

I think because as you said, they now have a timeline and plan, so its easier to write for now. I think Heroes could use something like this as well although the the show are split up into Volumes now. Storylines last for about 13 episodes before they change up. So if you want to give it another chance, the new story just started, now is the time .

We are tending to watch shows that are on the "off" stations like Psych, Monk, Top Chef, Closer and Burn Notice. Those are cluttering up our viewing time
