    >>A three-cup serving counts as one of the daily three servings of whole grains recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of a healthful diet.

All along, I had suspected as much. For years, a late-afternoon popcorn break has helped me make it through the day. I consider a single serving to be most of a 3.5-ounce microwave bag (I might share a little with close friends) or a good-size skilletful, popped the old-fashioned way, on top of the stove. If that is a little more than three cups, who's counting? Isn't more better?

In fact, if you eat enough popcorn, you might not have to eat any other whole grains at all.

Long ago, my grandmother must have intuited that popcorn was a health food. Occasionally, she ate a bowl of it for breakfast, as cereal. Of course she sprinkled some sugar over it and poured on some cream from our Jersey cow.

What's more, Grandma lived to age 99.

Life without popcorn seems unthinkable, or at least pretty boring.<<

    4 cups cooked popcorn

    1 cup heavy cream

Bring cream to a boil and add popcorn and butter. Purée in blender until smooth; add salt to taste. Melt butter and toss all ingredients together. Pour popcorn soup inside an isi-type soda siphon and charge with nitrous oxide. Garnish soup with lobster/mascarpone salad and popcorn powder.
