This one for 'Weight Watchers' - love it. Sure it's simplistic, but I appreciate having the guts to have a little fun.

Check it out - where do you weigh in in this campaign. See how I did that?

First, I am a Weight Watchers member and I love the program. I certainly recognize myself in that commercial all too well. The WW meetings are great support, they are very upbeat and welcoming and even when you have had a lousy week, you walk out of there with new energy. So it totally delivers on the promise made in the tagline if you are willing to hang in there and follow the WW program.

But for me, this spot kind of wobbles the line between being understanding and a little fat shaming. I know, I know, I am probably being hypersensitive and too PC and whatever. It is relatable, far more than a celebrity who was paid to take the weight off, so kudos for using more realistic humans. And typical before and after photos are the opposite of encouraging, because if you have a lot of weight to lose, that seems hopeless and daunting and impossible (usually with a disclaimer that "results are not typical" in tiny text).

It's a difficult problem. (If it wasn't, there wouldn't be 9 million different weight loss programs and strategies out there). I guess my concern is that it makes me wonder if we are laughing WITH the folks in the ad, or AT them. For someone getting up the courage to make a change to be heather, it is harder than anyone might realize to go to that first meeting. If I were just starting out, I don't know if this one would make me feel better or worse, or encouraged to go or just ashamed and hopeless.

    Sorry for the sermon!

Maybe laughter is a good way to get some new recruits - who knows?

Not at all! I was just sharing my reactions to the commercial. I enjoyed it the first time I saw it, but the more I thought about it, it gave me a little pause.

    >>I think it's important to be able to laugh at ourselves.<<

I totally agree, and I laugh at myself all the time. What's different, though, is laughing at someone else. There seems to be something a little less than empathy in this commercial (IMHO), which runs counter to the very supportive, understanding experience I have had in WW personally.

Maybe it's just my own issue, but the commercial feels a little off in some way to me.

Absolutely and I'm sure that's the intent. The before/after with various celebrities doesn't really motivate me personally.

Well, laughter is a really good core workout! Maybe they're trying to get people started subliminally ; )
