We had a "good cop" / "bad cop" mentality back then. Mom stayed home and provided warmth, cookies and kindness. Dad was the big guy to be afraid of. "Just wait until your father gets home" didn't just come from nowhere. Fathers were thought of as the stern, no nonsense side of the parental unit. You didn't mess with dear ole dad. Mom you could manipulate but dad? Don't even try it. That, to my recollection was the 50"s.
