I think that this is an urban legend that has roots in two things that are legitimate issues: not pausing a DVD for too long because its bad for the TV, and not pausing a tape for too long because it will damage the tape (this is usually handled automatically by most VCRs, which will switch from Pause to Stop automatically after a few minutes). P.S. - If you want to be sure to treat your DVD's well, just be sure to do the same thing you'd do for a VHS tape: rewind it all the way after every viewing.

(Kids ask your parents) Accept unlike a turntable the cd drive spins alot faster. Now adays the cd drives will stop spinning after a few moments so as not to heat up the cd and eventually burn the drives motor.
