A co-worker said this is a bad thing to do for an extended period of time. That is, hitting pause on a CD or DVD and leaving it like that for more than a minute or two. She says the laser reader will damage the disc.

Anyone know if this is true?

I think that this is an urban legend that has roots in two things that are legitimate issues: not pausing a DVD for too long because its bad for the TV, and not pausing a tape for too long because it will damage the tape (this is usually handled automatically by most VCRs, which will switch from Pause to Stop automatically after a few minutes).

P.S. - If you want to be sure to treat your DVD's well, just be sure to do the same thing you'd do for a VHS tape: rewind it all the way after every viewing.

Maybe someone else knows different, but I don't see how it would harm anything at all.

Accept unlike a turntable the cd drive spins alot faster. Now adays the cd drives will stop spinning after a few moments so as not to heat up the cd and eventually burn the drives motor.

However there is proof now that especially early CD's can wear out - degrade -- so be careful what you store your pictures on etc....not the lifetime storage we thought they were.

The one thing that can cause damage to something is like letting a game playfield sit on pause on your TV / monitor too long-- shadows can be burnt into the screen

with music pause just pauses the music. unlike stop which will make you go back to the first track. =)
