I just got back from a road trip around CA (No Disney in this one.). I've taken road trips through CA before and I've visited countless spots around the state. But this trip was quite different. I never really appreciated the beauty of California before. Maybe it's just because I'm getting older (I'll be 21 this year.). I fell in love with this state. Sure, it has it's rough spots and jerky people (For the most part, I found the people to be FAN-tastic.) but I still have to say CA has a magic all it's own.

All jokes aside, if you are a visitor to CA you will soon see that CA IS WORTH a Disney theme park. I used to think it was very silly to have a whole theme park based around a state, but it any state is worth such a thing CA wins by a land slide.

I will view my trip to DCA this summer in a much different light!

I explained that we had done it since they have it in California, and it was the same attraction, except at DCA they call it "Soarin' over California."

She insisted it had to be different since there were a lot of scenes in this one that were not shot in California. She said they must have gone all over the world to find such beautiful footage.

I told her that no, it was the same attraction, and every scene in it was from California.

She again insisted that couldn't be so. "They went from the mountains to the shoreline to the desert to farm areas and rivers... It was gorgeous!"

Yep, I said. All in California.

I think a lot of Californians take what they have for granted.

If you don't see or can't the beauty of this great state, you may want to open your eyes or take off your blind fold. The place is glimmering with what seems to me to be a bit of everything the world offers and some strictly California sights. From the hiddesn coastal communities along all of Highway 1 that nobody sees, to the very VERY rugged Sierra Nevadas that people just cant see unless they hike for days and days into the backcountry. Their are waterfalls, valleys, animals of all kinds, and a very unique and rich history that is far from un-excitng.

Sure ;) .. like lack of mass transit, hundreds of earthquake fault lines directly under us, and the worst traffic in the entire country. Take a 10-15 mile trip .. and don't expect it to take less than 1 hour.

I have been around the country many times and have found traffice to be awful in so many urban area. It's not just LA.

Whenever anyone complains about LA Traffic, I normally ask them have they ever been to the D.C. Beltway or Boston? They both as bad as LA.

The U.S. Census Bureau lists the following cities with average commutes longer than L.A.:

New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC.

Of course, in my case that's the subway and walking to/from home and work from the subway stops.

But the thing is, you really can't do it any faster during rush hour by driving. And I'm about 9-10 miles from my office.

Heck, sometimes it takes an hour driving on the weekends. Part of the problem is that Manhattan is, well, an island. And you've got instant bottlenecks at the finite number of bridges and tunnels.

I know the 405, the 10, and others can be heinous. But you don't know heinous till you've tackled the BQE or the Cross-Bronx Expressway.

What do we have? Most Californians stick around their own geographical locations.

I have been to other places like "river rafting" just like the movie, yet there are MANY places that are not represented in the movie.

I can immediately think of Santa Barbara, Catalina Island, San Diego, the scenic coastline, Hearst Castle.

There were unrecognizable golf courses, farm land, mountains, and rivers.

Was the aircraft carrier in San Diego? That was my assumption.

No wonder people who visited EPCOT thought the movie wasn't in California. Who could have guessed?

DCA seems very generic. It is Wally World.

    The Mojave Desert.

And that is just what I've seen in a few brief trips. I've never seen Yosemite and the other high mountain areas.

I think Minnesota is a beautiful state. But for variety of gorgeous scenery nothing comes close to California.

(Not to mention the great climate!)

    Most people do, actually, everywhere.

But for those who don't, California offers more variety of beauty than any other state. I'm very glad that my folks made sure, while I was growing up there, that we saw Yosemite (several times), Sequoia and Kings Canyon, the central CA coast, the deserts, the mountains, San Francisco, San Diego, etc. etc.

<I have been to other places like "river rafting" just like the movie, yet there are MANY places that are not represented in the movie.

San Diego is in there, as are some coastal shots. But what was left out just underlines how much they had to work with.

<There were unrecognizable golf courses, farm land, mountains, and rivers.>

Does the fact that you couldn't name exactly where they were diminish their beauty? I don't think so. (And info on where they shot is easily available).

<Was the aircraft carrier in San Diego? That was my assumption.>

    Yes.

<No wonder people who visited EPCOT thought the movie wasn't in California. Who could have guessed?>

The point is when I told her it was ALL California, she couldn't believe there was so much gorgeous scenery all from one state.

<DCA seems very generic. It is Wally World.>

    Non sequitur, and hardly.

(Roadtrip)<I think Minnesota is a beautiful state. But for variety of gorgeous scenery nothing comes close to California.>

    Agreed.

Or maybe how much they can get avoid paying licensing fees.

DCA isn't distinctive as a park. Soarin' kinda proves it even though its the best ride of the park showing only Disneyland as the landmark, thus ensuring Disneyland represents California.

Most of the places you mentioned would not require this. Hearst castle might, but Santa Barbara or Catalina in general would not.

Nobody ever said DCA was as good as DL.
